What to Expect During a Photo Session

What to expect in your photo session with Atlanta photographer Janet Howard

What to Expect During a Photo Session

So, you’ve booked a photo session, and you’re wondering, what have I gotten myself into? Not all photographers are the same, so. If you’re working with me for the first time, here’s what to expect!

  • Don’t worry about posing. I’m not a super “posey” photographer. I’m not going to be asking you to pose very precisely, like tilting your head just a little and putting your hand under your chin, like those old style department store portraits. I’m going to find a nice spot where the light and background are good, and then I’ll want you to relax, and talk to each other (or me!). Then I’ll pepper in a few suggestions when you need a little help.
  • I’ll check in with you a day or two before to confirm. Especially if your session is outdoors, we’ll check on the weather to make Mother Nature isn’t going to mess with our plan. If she does, there is no fee to reschedule a session. Or, we can change the location to someplace indoors.
  • Make sure you speak up! Not all poses work for all couples. If I ask you to do something and it just feels weird, let me know! If you don’t speak up, I’ll probably notice that you don’t look comfortable and adjust, but you don’t have to wait for me. Our session is about capturing the genuine you, so your comfort is most important.
  • Keep moving. In my efforts to capture the most genuine you, I want things to look and feel natural. So don’t feel like you’re posing. Just keep moving, looking different ways, being playful, moving your hands, arms, legs, just like you would when you’re NOT having your photo taken. And then sometimes you’ll do something super cute and I’ll say “Ooooh, do that again!”
  • If you have ideas of specific things you want, like specific poses, shots, or style, please share your notes or inspiration with me before the session. That way if I need to bring some specific lighting or lenses or other equipment, I’ll be able to bring what I need.
  • After the shoot, it’ll take about 1-2 weeks to turn your images around. You’ll get an email with a link to your online gallery, where you can view and download all your images, order prints, and share to social media.
